The Case for a Medicine Cabinet With Lights in Every Bathroom Remodel

Overhead lighting has been the default in bathrooms for decades, and it’s rarely questioned during a remodel. Homeowners plan the vanity, the tile, the fixtures — and then bolt a light bar above the mirror almost as an afterthought. That habit is starting to change, largely because a medicine cabinet with lights solves a problem overhead fixtures never could: even, shadow-free light exactly where it’s needed, combined with storage that doesn’t eat into wall space.

It’s a small shift in thinking, but it changes how a bathroom actually functions day to day.

The Problem With Standard Bathroom Lighting

A single fixture mounted above the mirror throws light downward, which means the brightest point in the room is the top of your head — not your face. That creates shadows under the eyes, nose, and chin, which is exactly the wrong outcome for tasks like shaving, applying makeup, or checking a rash before deciding whether it needs attention.

Dimmer switches help a little, but they don’t fix the direction of the light. The fixture is still aimed the wrong way. Warmer bulbs can soften the effect but tend to mute colors in a way that makes it harder to judge things accurately, whether that’s a skin tone or the exact color of an outfit.

What Changes When Lights Are Built Into the Cabinet

Rather than treating light and storage as two separate purchases, a growing number of homeowners are switching to a single fixture that handles both. Mounting the light source around or behind the mirror instead of above it puts illumination at eye level and removes most of the shadowing that overhead fixtures cause.

Color temperature on these units is usually adjustable, often somewhere between 3000K and 6000K, so the same cabinet can shift from a warmer tone in the evening to a brighter, more neutral tone for closer tasks. Touch-sensor dimming means that adjustment takes a tap rather than a trip to a light switch across the room.

The storage side isn’t an afterthought either. Behind the lit mirror, most of these cabinets offer adjustable interior shelving, which means the same footprint that used to hold just a mirror now holds toiletries, medications, and grooming tools out of sight.

Features Worth Comparing Before You Buy

Not every lit medicine cabinet is built the same way, and the differences matter once you’re comparing models side by side:

    • Light quality — look for CRI 90+ ratings, which indicate accurate color rendering rather than a washed-out or overly cool appearance
    • Anti-fog coating — genuinely useful after a hot shower, and worth checking since not every model includes it
    • Hardware details — soft-close hinges and magnetic door catches sound minor but noticeably reduce daily wear and noise
    • Built-in power — some cabinets include electrical outlets rated up to 1800W, plus USB-A and USB-C ports, which removes the need for a separate outlet near the mirror
    • Certification — ETL or UL certification on the electrical components is worth confirming, especially on any cabinet with a built-in outlet

Price ranges vary widely across this category, generally running from around $150 for simpler surface-mount units up toward $1,800 or more for larger recessed models with full electrical integration.

    Installation and Practical Notes

Most of the hesitation around these cabinets comes down to installation, not the product itself. A few things make the process more predictable:

    • Recessed (in-wall) models require confirming stud spacing and, if you want a built-in outlet, existing electrical rough-in before ordering
    • Surface-mount versions skip the wall cavity entirely and are usually the easier retrofit for an older bathroom
    • No-drill mounting options exist on select mirrors, which helps for renters or anyone who’d rather avoid wall modifications
    • A licensed electrician, not just a general contractor, is typically required if you’re adding a hardwired outlet inside the cabinet — worth confirming with local code before finalizing plans

    The Takeaway

Swapping a plain mirror and overhead light bar for a single lit cabinet is one of the more practical upgrades available in a bathroom remodel. It solves the shadow problem overhead lighting can’t fix, adds storage without taking up extra wall space, and — depending on the model — cuts down on separate purchases for outlets and charging ports. Retailers that specialize in bathroom fixtures, including Allsumhome, carry a range spanning simple surface-mount cabinets through premium recessed models — for a fixture that gets used daily, it’s a meaningful return on a single upgrade.
